  15. <p>     DIED. KEVIN CARTER, 33, photojournalist; an apparent suicide
  16. from carbon monoxide poisoning; in Johannesburg. Born in South
  17. Africa, Carter began his professional career as a sports photographer
  18. in 1983. In 1993 he took what would become his most famous photo:
  19. a stark image of a grimly patient vulture perched near the frail,
  20. fetal-position form of a starving Sudanese child. Reprinted
  21. around the world, the picture earned Carter a 1994 Pulitzer
  22. Prize. But friends say he was haunted by the violence he covered
  23. and depressed by the death of a colleague killed on assignment
  24. only days after Carter's prize was announced. After snapping
  25. his famous photograph, Carter would later reveal, he chased
  26. off the vulture but remained rooted to the scene for hours,
  27. "smoking cigarettes and crying."
