- <p> DIED. KEVIN CARTER, 33, photojournalist; an apparent suicide
- from carbon monoxide poisoning; in Johannesburg. Born in South
- Africa, Carter began his professional career as a sports photographer
- in 1983. In 1993 he took what would become his most famous photo:
- a stark image of a grimly patient vulture perched near the frail,
- fetal-position form of a starving Sudanese child. Reprinted
- around the world, the picture earned Carter a 1994 Pulitzer
- Prize. But friends say he was haunted by the violence he covered
- and depressed by the death of a colleague killed on assignment
- only days after Carter's prize was announced. After snapping
- his famous photograph, Carter would later reveal, he chased
- off the vulture but remained rooted to the scene for hours,
- "smoking cigarettes and crying."
